# Ranks

> Give a member a guild rank, its Discord role and a [Rank] nickname with one /promote.

`/promote` with a `user` and a `rank` gives a Discord member a rank in-game and on Discord in one go. It is
bot-admin only.

```
/promote user:@Someone rank:Veteran
/promote user:@Someone rank:Trial Officer guild:sb
```

## The ranks

Highest first:

| Rank | In-game rank | Discord role set by |
| - | - | - |
| **Senior Officer** | Officer | `RANK_ROLE_SENIOR_OFFICER` |
| **Officer** | Officer | `RANK_ROLE_OFFICER` |
| **Trial Officer** | Officer | `RANK_ROLE_TRIAL_OFFICER` |
| **Veteran** | Veteran | `RANK_ROLE_VETERAN` |
| **Elite** | Elite | `RANK_ROLE_ELITE` |
| **Titan** | Titan | `RANK_ROLE_TITAN` |

The three officer tiers share Hypixel's one **Officer** rank; the tier exists only on Discord.

## What it does

* **In-game:** `/g setrank <name> <rank>` in the `guild` you name, or else in whichever bridged guild the
  member is in, found by reading the rosters. This needs a [bridge link](https://thehypixelguardians.mintlify.site/tribridge/account-linking.md): a member
  who has not linked is ranked on Discord only. The bot never guesses a Minecraft name from a nickname,
  because a wrong guess would change somebody else's rank.
* **On Discord:** the rank's role, the other five rank roles removed, and the nickname
  `[Rank] <Minecraft name>` (their own name when unlinked), cut to Discord's 32 characters. The Knight
  role stays.

Each step reports separately in the reply, one failing does not stop the others, and the whole change is
recorded in the [audit channel](https://thehypixelguardians.mintlify.site/tribridge/auditing.md).

## Setting it up

1. Put each rank's role id in `.env` (see [Configuration](https://thehypixelguardians.mintlify.site/tribridge/configuration.md)) and restart the bot. A
   rank with no id set uses the server role with the rank's name. An id that matches no role is reported
   rather than replaced by a same-named role, so a deleted role is noticed.
2. Give the bot **Manage Roles** and **Manage Nicknames**, with its own role above every rank role and above
   the members it ranks. Discord never lets a bot rename the server owner.
3. The guild's Minecraft account must be allowed to change ranks in-game.
